Landing a Jump on a Dirt Bike: Absorbing Without Getting Caught Out
A good jump landing is decided before impact: you read the landing slope from the top of the arc, adjust the bike’s attitude accordingly, and let your legs absorb the shock while keeping arms and legs slightly bent, never locked. Reading the landing before you get there
Not all landings are the same. A flat landing, at close to zero angle, needs the bike almost level at impact. On a two-wheel landing, distribute weight according to the slope: the steeper the downhill, the more you can let the rear touch slightly before the front to take advantage of the ground’s natural angle. On a flat landing, aim for both wheels touching down together as much as possible.
Handling unexpected landings
A nose-high landing, where the front touches after the rear when the terrain didn’t call for it, requires staying off the brakes. Let the front wheel come down naturally while keeping your weight slightly back, rather than braking immediately, which could pitch the front down hard. A nose-low landing, the opposite, with the front touching first and hard, needs a rearward weight shift at impact to stop the bike from continuing to rotate forward.
