Why 2-strokes carbon up more than 4-strokes
On a 2-stroke, lubricating oil is mixed directly into the fuel and burned along with it. A 4-stroke, with its oil confined to a separate case and never burned in combustion, doesn’t see this in the same proportions. Signs it’s time and how to do it
Gradual power loss, especially at high rpm, often signals carbon buildup that shrinks the combustion chamber and shifts the effective compression ratio. Harder starting, or an unusual pinging sound known as pre-ignition, can also point to carbon that heats up and ignites early, ahead of the spark — a problem that can damage the piston over time if untreated.
